01 — The Society
What we are, and what we are for.
A sound knowledge of the fiqh of medicine is a personal obligation — farḍ ʿayn — upon every Muslim physician.
Medicine in Bangladesh is practised by tens of thousands of Muslim physicians, nurses and allied health workers, yet the ethical and juristic dimension of their calling has long lacked a common institutional home. BIMS was founded to be that home — to gather the whole medical community, connect daily practice to the tradition of Islamic medical ethics, and see that the rulings of the Sharīʿah are known, taught and lived out in clinical work.

A lawful answer to a trade Islam forbids. Osteology sets are lent to student members under a written protocol approved by the Society’s Shariah Board, ensuring human remains are handled with the dignity Islam commands.

Part of a movement half a century in the making.
Since the first Islamic medical association was founded in North America in the 1960s, physicians across the Muslim world have built national bodies upon one conviction: medicine belongs within the ethics of Islam. BIMS is Bangladesh’s place in that line.

Alongside IMANA, FIMA, PIMA, MUKISI and others, these bodies share one aim: that a firm place for Islam within the medical system lets the fiqh of medicine reach the bedside — carried from one country to the next.
06 — Publications
Where the scholar and the physician write for one another.
BIMSJ publishes scholarship where two disciplines meet — the rulings of medical fiqh and their clinical grounds, Islamic psychology, Shariah hospital governance and the ethics of emerging medicine.
Its first issue examined the skeleton trade, the beginning of pregnancy and the fiqh of abortion.
07 — Medical Fatwa Service
فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
Clinical questions, answered through a defined method.
Questions carrying a fiqh dimension — end-of-life care, transplantation, fertility, psychiatry and fasting in illness — are considered by the Society’s Shariah Board through clinical evidence, juristic principles and the circumstances of the patient.

May a diabetic patient on insulin keep the fasts of Ramadan?
The answer depends on the patient’s medical risk, likely harm, treatment needs and the juristic principles that govern illness and fasting.
